There’s no reason to wait until spring to give your home a thorough top-to-bottom cleaning. Save stress and energy and start early with smaller tasks that you can do in your free time. If you tackle the inside of your home before spring really hits, you can focus entirely on outdoor chores when the warmer weather arrives.

Face the dust. It’s an easy task to overlook, but a complete dusting of your entire home can be accomplished fairly quickly. Get all surfaces and trinkets, dusty shelves, baseboards, door frames and windows. This is also a good time to check your air filters to make sure dust isn’t building up quickly.

Wash all your bedding. Sheets and pillowcases need to be washed more frequently, but now is a good time to tackle all of that – blankets, mattress toppers, and dust ruffles, if you use them. The pillows, including the duvet, can also go in the washing machine. Reheating on the gentle cycle is a good bet, or check the manufacturer’s instructions. If you have foam pillows, skip the machine and refer to the label instead.

Clean ceiling fans and vent covers. We all glanced at the ceiling fan and wanted to scream when we noticed the dust – avoid that feeling and quickly wipe down each fan blade. Remove the vent covers, including the bathroom vent cover, and wash them with dish soap and water.

Deep clean your devices. Now’s the perfect time to clean the oven, wipe down and sanitize the inside of the refrigerator, scrub the microwave, and get the grime out of the nooks and crannies of your countertop appliances, like blenders and food processors. Descale your coffee maker with vinegar and cold water and discard old crumbs from your toaster.

Purge cupboards. If it’s snowing or raining, put on some music or a good audiobook and sit down to throw away all the clothes you’re no longer wearing. It’s a boring chore, but it still feels good to do.
