Many know Kenneth Vella as an expert horse racing journalist.

But he is also headmaster of Mater Boni Consilii St Joseph Paola and Malta’s non-resident ambassador to Estonia and Finland.

Here he tells us about his passion for horse racing, the Maria Regina party at La Marsa, and what his childhood memories are.

Kahlil Gibran, author of the famous and inspirational book, The Prophet.

Maltese actress Gemma Portelli.

What is your favorite TV series?

I don’t have one in particular. When I have free time, I prefer to watch international and sports news on Italian and English channels as well as French and Swedish horse racing.

What is your favorite game or sport to watch and play?

In order of preference – Horse Racing, Football and Cycling (I have a passion for cycling thanks to my father who was a local champion in the 60s)

What team do you support?

Inter. But today, I am no longer as passionate and enthusiastic as in my childhood. Today’s Inter players cannot be compared to Rumenigge, Brehme, Mattheus, Bergomi, Diaz, Berti, Altobelli, Passarella, Zenga, Baresi and others.

What song would you sing at karaoke night?

It would depend on the mood. But I could opt for Soft Cell’s Torch. I hope I will be the last to be chosen!

Who is your favorite singer/group?

Very difficult to choose between Duran Duran, Wham, Tears For Fears and Depeche Mode. However, if I had to choose only one group, I would choose Depeche Mode.

What show/event would you like to attend/have you attended?

The Forever Young festival will be held in Ireland later this year between July 15 and 17. It is considered the biggest band festival of the 80s in the world.

What three items would you take with you to a desert island?

A box of matches, the Bible and a knife.

Which of the five senses would you say is the strongest?

I think smell.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?

I don’t think I’ve ever eaten anything unusual. I am very traditional in this aspect.

What is that one thing you couldn’t spend a day without?

Mobile phone.

Which fictional character do you most identify with?

I have always admired Sherlock Holmes and I have always been described by my colleagues as being a good observer and that helps me to be a good judge of character. I also think I have very good logical reasoning skills.

22. I too was born on March 22 and at 22 you don’t feel very young or old.

Definitely not.

What is your favorite animal?

It’s easy… the horse. Horses have been my passion since I was little. I was brought up in Marsa and my relatives used to take me to Marsa Hippodrome where I used to watch the races. I also have horses of my own and in the past I often went horseback riding. I still follow this sport.

What is your favorite type of foreign food?

Spaghetti…especially carbonara

What is your favorite hobby?

Market. When I have time, I enjoy a one hour walk from Marsascala to St Thomas Bay.

What is your favorite color?

Blue because it is considered the color of the sky and the sea, associated with wide open spaces, freedom, intuition, imagination, expansiveness, inspiration and sensitivity. It also represents meanings of depth, confidence, loyalty, sincerity, wisdom, confidence, stability, faith, heaven and intelligence. Blue is also associated with my favorite traditional Maltese festival, that of Marija Regina de Marsa.

Holly and Benjamin.

What did you enjoy doing the most during the summer holidays?

Meeting friends, playing football in the streets of La Marsa (Maria Regina Area) late at night when traffic was almost non-existent and above all traveling abroad in July with my father who worked as a long-distance driver.

What career did you see yourself in when you were young?

Lawyer, but I changed my career to become a teacher for several reasons.

What is your best childhood memory?

Together with my grandmother, my cousins ​​and my friends, I prepare Maria Regina’s party.

Did you learn to ride a bike?

Yes with the help of my father. My dad still has the first bike I rode.

Who was your superhero?

My grandmother, who died two years ago. Alone, she managed to take care of her 4 children and subsequently helped with the parenting of four nieces and nephews. Until her last days, she encouraged me to study, respect and help others. She has always been my source of inspiration and motivation.

What toy would you like to keep?

A matchbox truck

What subject were you good at in school?

German, in classes 1 and 2, I even received a special award from the German Embassy in Malta for excelling in the subject.

What subject did you hate the most in school?

Physics – I had a phobia when it came to this topic.

Was there a family tradition that was never missed?

Attend Christmas Midnight Mass at Marsa Maria Regina Church.

What are the best values ​​you owe to your parents?

The values ​​of respect, mutual aid and that I must always keep my feet on the ground and not forget my roots. I come from a working class background, my father was a long-distance driver and my mother worked in a factory in Bulebel. They did everything to give me a good education, to see me succeed in my studies, my career and my professional life.

What would you change about yourself if you could?

Pay less attention to what other people say.

What really makes you angry?

The lack of gratitude of certain people whom you would have helped on different occasions.

Not having traveled and visited more countries when I was younger.
