New gaming study reveals high demand for multiplayer and cross-platform games
State of Live Games 2021 report examines impact of new content on player engagement and revenue
SAN FRANCISCO – (BUSINESS WIRE) –
Unity (NYSE: U), the world’s leading platform for the creation and exploitation of real-time 3D content (RT3D), today released two supporting reports revealing the high demand for multiplayer games and the importance of post content. -launch to maintain player engagement. Unity Gaming Services‘ Cross-platform game study driven by The Harris poll from Unity, found that more than half of all Americans (56%) have played multiplayer games in the past year, with 87% of those players playing cross-platform games. Illustrating the need to keep these actors engaged, 2021 State of the Game Live Report, developed in partnership with Akamai – the world’s most trusted solution to power and protect digital experiences – details how post-launch content updates generate and maintain high levels of player engagement, especially for mobile game studios that have seen an 86% increase in in-app purchase revenue after a drop in content. Together, the reports highlight the need for developers to have better handling of the game after launch, which is part of Unity Gaming Services‘as a new platform experience that gives developers of all sizes the best solutions to quickly create multiplayer games and efficiently run their live operations.
“The ability to connect friends and communities across different platforms is increasingly becoming an expectation of gamers and in turn is becoming a tabletop issue for developers,” said Felix Thé, Senior Vice President, Business Management. products, operating solutions, Unity. “With this massive demand, it’s also important to ensure a content pipeline informed by player insights to fuel continued engagement and drive growth. This is a huge call to action for the developer community, as gamers have said, and finding scalable solutions to create and maintain cross-platform experiences will be critical to the success of multiplayer games going forward. .
Unity Gaming Services ” Cross-platform game study Unearths new information on the popularity of multiplayer games and explores player experiences with cross-platform games. Specifically, it reveals that there is a massive demand for gamers not only to play video games together, but to play together on any device, from console to PC to mobile. There is also a strong appetite for more games that can deliver this type of frictionless experience. Here are some of the main findings of this study:
Multiplayer games have been overwhelmingly popular over the past year in the United States – more than half (56%) of Americans have played multiplayer games, of which 62% are male and 50% female.
87% of multiplayer gamers have played cross-platform games in the past year.
Mobile is a very important platform for cross-platform gamers: among those who play cross-platform games, almost half (44%) play both on mobile and console and almost a third (29%) play only on mobile.
43% of cross-platform gamers say they want more cross-platform gaming options.
2021 State of the Game Live Report, developed in partnership with Akamai, reveals important growth strategies for studios when it comes to determining the impact of new content on player engagement, and highlights solutions to help ensure a continued success after launch. Ensuring a continuous content pipeline can often be a resource constraint for developers, but the benefits have proven to be huge for scaling up and keeping players engaged. Here are some of the main findings of the report:
Sessions per daily active user increased nearly 8% for high-end mobile games in the week following the release of new content.
Looking at the timing a week before and after a drop in content, mobile game studios can see an 86% increase in revenue from in-app purchases and a 75% increase in average revenue per daily active user.
Mobile game developers should be mindful of file size as it can impact app install rates – if app size exceeds 500MB, install rates start to drop dramatically.
Gathering valuable player feedback is crucial for studios to build a successful post-launch content pipeline.
“Gamers can’t play what they don’t have,” said Jon Alexander, vice president of product management at Akamai. “While your audience may rely on the app stores of the world’s largest smartphone makers to download your game, this initial download will only get them so far. Updates, fixes, additional tier packs, match information, and more also need to be sent to your audience on an ongoing basis to keep them engaged. For the best gaming experience, a scalable and highly distributed content delivery network (CDN) partner can give you the reach you and your players need to get the most out of your game.
In order to meet player demands and deliver the right content at the right time, studios need the best tools to help them achieve their goals. Last month, Unity launched Unity Gaming Services, an improved and streamlined platform to equip developers of all sizes with the solutions they need to quickly create cross-platform multiplayer experiences, handle all scenarios to run a game. live and monitor their performance in a single connected interface.
